Projects in progress

McLaren M12

You may remember sometime back we showed you our project to put a 60s-vintage Aurora A-Jet 1/32 scale McLaren body on a much-modified Fly sidewinder chassis with wheels and tires from a Monogram Greenwood Corvette.  At that time it was in the primer stage.

Here’s where we are with it now:

As you can see we now have the car painted in its overall red with decals and some detail painting done. We have fabricated a set of “bigblock” injector stacks using axle spacers made for 1/24 scale commercial-track cars with 1/16″ front axles.  Still to come are a driver figure, more details including a roll bar and mirrors, more decals, additional detail painting, clear coating, and final assembly.  Rear tires are aftermarket silicones.

Super Cooper

Here’s a new one we have been working on.  This one started as a Monogram Cooper-Cobra. but we are turning it into heavily modified Cooper with flared fenders to cover wide wheels and tires from a Carrera Ferrari 512BB.

The model is intended to look like what might have resulted if somebody in the mid-60s had taken a late-production Cooper Monaco and stuffed in a big Chevrolet V8.  Of course, the car would need cooling, downforce, and wide rubber to go with all that horsepower.  A lot of cars were modified like this back then and used in pro racing, often followed by careers in SCCA club racing.  Many of these cars, the ones that survived, have been converted back to their original configurations for vintage racing.

Here’s a 3/4 front view.  Mean-looking, isn’t it?  It’s so ugly it’s beautiful.

Here we see where we are with this car and where we started.  More to come in future newsletters.
