Just for fun…
Fiat 124 project
We’re big fans of SCCA club racing around here. you will probably have noticed that many of our kitbash projects have been aimed at creating cars, real or mythical, that raced or could have raced for a national championship in one of the SCCA’s many club racing classes. They have included numerous A-Sedan (TransAm type) Mustangs and Camaros as well as a Javelin and a Pontiac GTO. We have also done or are in process with a McLaren M12 and our “Super Cooper” both A-Sports Racing cars. We’ve done several A-production Corvettes, a Cobra, and even a mythical production class Ferrari GTO roadster. Our eventual goal is to create two SCCA race groups, a big-bore sports-racing, production, and sedan group and one for smaller production cars and sedans, each with about 40 cars. We also want to do a GT1 grid for more modern tube-frame cars.
We’re fairly well along with out big-bore grid but just starting out on the lesser game. We’ve chosen, for our first small-bore kitbash, to take one of these…
An SCX Fiat 124 rally car and turn it into something like this…
or like this…
In SCCA racing the Fiat 124 has raced in the E-production or F-production classes for many years. Individual cars have undergone extensive development and some of them are really cool-looking race cars.
Here’s where we are so far with ours.
We have cut the top off and cut out most of the interior, leaving the model’s original roll cage, which will be retained for our project. I’s a bit crooked in this photo but it will be straightened and modified before we are done. We also removed the entire lighting system from the car.
We have also begun to return the hood to a more stock appearance by cutting off the housings for the extra driving lights found on the rally car. You can see, too, that we have replaced the original wheels with Minilites from a Scalextric TransAm car with the original Scalextric tires turned don to a smaller diameter suitable for a smaller car. Other than the wheels and tires we have retained the original SCX chassis and mechanicals unchanged, though we will eventually see what we can do to enhance its performance if needed.
We picture this car as racing with Scalextric and Pioneer MGBs, Fly and Autoart Alfa Romeo sedans, Scalextric Caterham Sevens, Scalextric and Revell Cortinas, classic Minis from several sources, Fly Classic BMW 320i’s, Carrera BMW 2002s, and most of the Ninco classic cars, as well as kitbashes of similar cars from resin or model kit bodies and probably many other RTR cars we can’t immediately think of.
We’ll be keeping you updated on this project as we go along.
