Driven by Ray Harroun for Nordyke & Marmon Company to a 1st place finish at the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1911.
Ray Harroun was the project engineer as well as the driver of this car. He came out of retirement to drive and won the event before re-retiring for good in the winner's circle.
The Marmon Wasp was equipped with a 7,820 cm³, 6-cylinder engine for a power evaluated over 100 hp. He ran alone without co-driver, getting around this disadvantage by applying a mirror above and in front of the steering wheel, inventing the first rearview mirror for automobiles.
The very first Indy 500 was the largest racing purse offered to date - $27,550. 46 entries applied, from which 40 qualified by sustaining 75 mph along the main straight. Starting grid positions were determined by date of filing of official entry forms, rather than speed!
