The race featured 20 of the world's top drivers including nine of the fourteen F1 World Champions. All drivers competed in identical examples of the Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 with minor race modifications. The 12-lap race was won by Senna and is widely regarded as marking his ascension onto the world stage of motor racing, having beaten some of the greatest drivers in equal machinery.
