The 1967 24 Hours of LeMans shaped up to be the decisive battle between the forces of Ferrari and Ford. To open the season Ferrari's 330P4 finished 1-2-3 at Daytona after Ford's Mark IIs, upodated from their 1966 LeMans-winning form, fell out with identical transmission failures. Ford came back to win at Sebring with its new Mark IV. At LeMans the Fords dominated the early running but suffered a catastrophic multi-car crash during the night that took several of their top runners out of the race, giving Ferrari some hope of victory.. However, the Mark IV of Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt ran faultlessly for the entire race to take not only the overall win but the Index of Performance. Two Ferraris, the #21 car of Scarfiotti and Parkes (C2641) and the #24 car of Willy Mairesse and Jean Blaton (who raced under the nom de course of "Beurlys") finished second and third, ahead of another Ford. This model, C2642, is the 3rd place P4
