Restoring the Scale Appearance of Fly 10th Anniversary Cars

As you can see from the photo above the Fly 10th Anniversary Porsche 917K is a good-looking, realistic scale model except for one thing – that ugly 10th anniversary logo on the left front fender. Now, if you are a collector buying the car as a collector’s item, and the 10th anniversary aspect of it is important to you, then having the logo there is no big deal. However, if you want an accurate Porsche 917 model it definitely detracts from the car’s appeal.

There’s good news, however, for those of you who’d prefer your 917 unencumbered by this little historical faux pas. You can get rid of it completely in just a few minutes. All you need is some fine polishing compound, a soft, clean cloth, an X-acto knife, some good-quality car wax, and a Q-tip or two.

Wet a corner of the cloth and put some polishing compound on it. Gently rub it across the 10th anniversary logo, being careful not to rub over nearby paint markings. You’ll quickly see the offending marking disappearing under the polishing compound’s gentle abrasive action. On the 917 the logo extends down into the louvers at the top of the fender. Carefully and very gently scrape the remnants of the logo from these areas. Spray some wax on a clean, dry portion of your cloth and wipe it across the rubbed area. Let the wax dry, wipe off the haze, and you have a nice, shiny fender freed of the unwanted marking. Use the Q-tips to clean wax haze out of the louvers and any other recessed areas. You may need two or three applications of the wax to restore the glossy look fully, but when you’re done it will be impossible to tell that the 10th anniversary symbol was ever there.
